Re: Michail Antonio - How good is he?
His holdup play, surprised me a lot over the last few months.

Whilst he can often have the touch of a rapist, he's obviously worked hard on this as I counted at least 3 or 4 times the ball was just whacked up to him, in which he controlled the ball, held the defender off and laid the ball onto the midfieders.

Re: Michail Antonio - How good is he?
To all those saying he's a 'rubbish footballer':

Would you want him in another kit running at our defence?

Do you hold your breath when he breaks from midfield?

Do you rise out of your chair as the ball comes over to him in the box?

He's unconventional, No disputing that but he gives us pace, strength commitment and goals.

On what planet is that Rubbish?

Indeed Block.

The comparisons to Vardy are not that far fetched.

Both played up through the ranks. Both happy to be playing. Both bust a gut for their teams. Both play well when in their comfort zone.

Both, you suspect would wilt under scrutiny and expectation if they made a big money move to a bigger club.

Re: Michail Antonio - How good is he?
There's some weird comments on here about him not being a very good footballer but he's massively important for what he brings to the side.

I assume what is meant is that he is a good footballer, but in an unorthodox way.

Poor footballers don't make the massive positive contribution that he does.

And to think Bilic played him RIGHT BACK.

That little piece of managerial genius often gets overlooked by the Bilic acolytes on here.

Re: Michail Antonio - How good is he?
The thing with Antonio, is that he's so strong and quick, he often gets himself in such a tangle but somehow manages to work his way out of it to his benefit, defenders absolutely hate playing against him.

The fear factor alone puts defenders off.

Our team is better than the sum of its parts.
He looks better with us. We look better with him.

Its a good old symbiotic West Ham relationship.

Re: Michail Antonio - How good is he?
In all his years at Wednesday and Forest,he was used solely as a flying winger. Then Bilic tried to turn him into a right wing back, despite an obvious weakness in defending. It took Moyes to play him up front and it has paid off. Shame he is not five years younger really.

Re: Michail Antonio - How good is he?
I think we all agree he is not the most skillful or talented player to put on the famous claret and blue shirt. He makes up for it though with passion, commitment, energy, drive, power and pace. He reminds me of a smaller version of Jonah Lomu (RIP) and we love him

There were many delighted when Palace were supposedly offering £10m for him a while back.
Agree he has definitely worked on his instincts in the box.
POACHERS goals the last two
Is at his peak now as he has added some intelligence to his game but still works hard.

2017? He did it on 16.01.21.

-----------------

As I've always said with Antonio, he is a crap footballer but he is effective. He has definitely improved his 'football brain' though in the last 12 months and is understanding how to use his body more and his movement / positioning has improved.

He is still trying to occasional shot from out of the box though...

Re: Michail Antonio - How good is he?
His biggest weakness previously in the wide roles was passing accuracy and first touch and crossing. He would dispossessed or run down "cul de sacs" etc. But that is less of a problem in a leading striker role as he is getting on the end of things rather than having to get in behind and create. He is using his strength and speed to run the channels, press defenders but also to get in the box on the end of things.

However, and maybe its one of those conscious bias things, he does seem to have improved his first touch and ability to control the ball, hold off defenders.

You wonder if Nolan or someone has been working with him on some of this? In fact, the impact of what is a strong backroom team ( Nolan, Pearce, Irvine) is not really known. We can only assume its all helping even if Moyesiah is the master and commander?

`A bit of a Billy Bonds if you will`.

Blimey.... really???

I was thinking along the lines of a `Bit of a Clyde Best' is more appropriate...

He's ok... on his day yeah very effective... but I still think his legs don't know what his brain is thinking... lets put it this way I can't see any big teams coming in for him... which is good for us and our hero worshipping fan base

Re: Michail Antonio - How good is he?
To be honest I've not seen many anti-Antonio posters. Most I've seen have all echoed his importance to the side, either as a winger or now a converted forward. I think people do have a different view about how good a footballer he is but that doesn't really matter if he is putting in a shift, scoring goals and we are winning games.

In reality he is a really good fit for our club. One who has attributes the fans love, an attitude and rags to riches story that fans connect with and all important loyalty to see out his career with us.

Re: Michail Antonio - How good is he?
It's funny how all the anti-Antonio slaggers have crawled back into their holes now. A couple of years ago they were very noisey on here, telling us how useless he was. Just shows how little some people on here know about football, not understanding how much he'd been effected by injury and being fucked around by managers.

I always backed him because apart from his obvious strengths I loved his wholehearted attitude to the game and the fact that he played with a smile on his face.

Michail Antonio is probably best described as a rough diamond. A bit of a Billy Bonds if you will. Fantastically effective for the club but unlikely to be considered as a regular England international. As anyone can now see once he is fully fit he is as effective in his position as just about any player in the PL, and he is currently worth his weight in gold to us.

I just hope that we can keep him going for another couple of years because he'll be impossible to replace.

Re: Michail Antonio - How good is he?
commentator on last night's match said that he averages a goal every 107 minutes on the pitch since beginning of last season. That equates to 30 goals over a whole season if he played every match (which we know he can't) but it does highlight just how good he has now become

Rossal 12:43 Wed Jan 20
Re: Michail Antonio - How good is he?
Yeah technically he isnt great, thats easily his weak point. But him and Moyes have clearly worked hard to turn him into a lethal out and out striker and its paying off.

Usually you get a battering ram type forward, good in the air and powerful but no pace. Or you get the slender whippets but not much strength and power. Antonio has it all

I genuinely cant think of many strikers around at the moment that get close to his pace and power. He is near enough irreplaceable
